Heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly and range from heat rash to life-threatening heat stroke.
At the first sign of any symptoms, get to a cool, shaded place, slowly drink water, and alert your peers or family members immediately. If you think the condition is serious, like heat stroke, call for emergency medical services.
Common symptoms for each illness include:
Heat rash: clusters of red bumps on skin; often appears on neck, upper chest, and folds of skin
Heat cramps: muscle spasms; pain usually appears in the abdomen, arms, or legs
Heat exhaustion: the body's response to an excessive loss of water and salt, usually through excessive sweating; signs include headache, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, light-headedness, weakness, thirst, irritability, or a fast heartbeat
Heat stroke: occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature; leads to confusion, fainting, potential seizures, no sweating or red, hot, dry skin.
